THE WORST OFFENDERS FRAGRANCES (PRESERVATIVES)
Fragrances are found in just about every type of cosmetic (and household) product, and they can cause allergic reactions—the more serious kind of skin reaction—in many women. There are over 5000 fragrances out there, and single products often contain more than 300 of them! This means it can be tough to figure out exactly to which fragrance(s) you're reacting.
What to do: You might think that a label "unscented" is a good way to avoid fragrances altogether. That's not the case. Products marked "unscented" may in fact contain so-called "masking fragrances" that are used to block scent, but can themselves cause skin reactions. Look instead for the label "fragrance free."
Preservatives
Perhaps culprit #2, preservatives are next on the list of skin-aggravating products. A common cause of skin reactions are the parabens, which can be found in a vast array of products, and can cause a red rash, scaly skin, and swollen eyelids. Manufacturers are responding to people's problems with parabens (a common type of preservative), however; there are now products on the market that are paraben-free.
