After a certain degree of spread around the body, there is no cure for malignant melanoma. That does not, however, mean that you should lose hope if you have this diagnosis. The goal is to control the disease as best as possible, fighting the stray cancer cells with every tool available. It is up to you and your doctor to decide how much discomfort you are willing to endure in treating your cancer. This is true for any disease; there are risks, benefits and side effects for most so-called "systemic" treatments. Systemic treatments are those that target stray cancer cells that are moving throughout your body. Because the cancer is no longer in one site, it's not possible to target a specific area for treatment. Instead, through use of several cancer-fighting tools, including drugs (known as chemotherapy), radiation therapy, conventional surgery, and other promising experimental treatments, doctors can aggressively battle your cancer as it tries to take over more healthy cells.
