If you are bothered by the scar that remains after the procedure, you may be eligible for reconstructive surgery in which surgeons take healthy skin and tissue from elsewhere on your body and use it to reshape the damaged area. The most serious form of skin cancer, called malignant melanoma, has the ability to spread to distant parts of your body. This process is called metastasis—the same term used to describe other cancers when they move from their original site to other parts of the body. The longer you wait to be diagnosed and treated, the more time cancers have to travel. This is why early detection is so very important. If you are diagnosed with malignant melanoma that has spread to other parts of your body, talk to your doctor about how widespread the disease is. Your chance of survival has a great deal to do with the extent of the spread.
