SKIN CANCER - DETECTING SKIN CANCER (PART 1) As we've discussed, the best way to prevent skin cancer is to avoid the sun. The next best thing to prevention, as with many cancers, is early detection. Since many of us were exposed to too much sun as children, even if we're being careful today, we're still at risk of getting skin cancer. Every blistering sunburn of childhood doubles your risk of developing melanoma later in life. You must be vigilant about screening your body for early signs of skin cancer. One approach is to become familiar with your skin in its normal condition with the help of a dermatologist or your family doctor. The best way to do that is to use a bright light and a mirror (or two, for examining hard-to-reach body parts) and slowly examine the entire surface of your skin. Then, once you know potential trouble spots to watch for—for instance, unusual moles, or areas that clearly have had sun damage in the past—you can do self-examinations on a regular basis—perhaps at the same time as do your monthly breast self-exam.
