PROCEDURES FOR THE SKIN – LIPOSUCTION (GENERAL INFORMATION) Essentially, liposuction is just what it sounds like: sucking fat out from under the skin, using either traditional vacuum tubing or, more recently, a long syringe-type instrument. Dr. Petra Schneider urges women to look at it not as a weight-loss procedure, but as a contouring procedure. The best results are had when you're at your ideal weight at the time of surgery, since weight gain or loss can throw off your appearance afterwards. Liposuction can be done on many parts of the body, including the thighs, knees, abdomen, hips, even under the arms. The fat can be stored and used for other procedures, such as fat injections (discussed above) or in larger amounts to build up sunken areas like deep scars. In the past, liposuction was recommended only for younger people, since their skin is more elastic and therefore "bounces back" to a tighter position after fat is removed. But today, older patients are having it done as well, with the caveat that they keep their expectations realistic. Liposuction cannot make 70-year-old thighs look like 20-year-old thighs, no matter how skilled the surgeon. As with any cosmetic procedure, approach liposuction with as realistic an idea of your potential result as possible. Look at "before-and-after" pictures of women who have had similar procedures done. Don't imagine that after surgery your body is going to look like a swimsuit model's—unless it was almost there to begin with. Liposuction can be helpful for particular fatty pocket areas, such as the sides of the thighs or hips where dimply fat can resist even faithful dieting and exercise.
