PROCEDURES FOR THE SKIN - "COSMETIC" SKIN PROCEDURES (CONCLUSION)
Of course, while most facials are perfectly harmless, there are exceptions. One dermatologist told me of a patient whose facialist squeezed warts, not pimples—and spread those warts around the patient's face! Just another reason why squeezing the skin isn't a great idea.
Steams are a different story, Terezakis says. Contrary to what most people believe, steams do not open the pores: They actually swell up the corneal or dead surface layer of skin cells, hydrate them, and tend to have more of a plug-ging-up than an emptying-out effect.
If you do opt for skin treatment in a salon, make sure that the environment is spotless, that the equipment used is absolutely sanitary (find out how thorough their cleaning process is), and that no strong abrasives or extreme temperatures will be used on your skin.
