YOUR SKIN, HAIR AND NAIL - COMMON MISTAKES IN DAILY SKIN-CARE REGIMEN (PART 2)

4. Too much exfoliation. Women are urged to constantly abrade their skin through facial scrubs and beauty-salon facials. In moderation, it's okay to remove the dead surface skin cells from your face, revealing fresh skin underneath. But when overdone, exfoliation can cause permanently dilated blood vessels and acne mechanica—that is, acne brought on by excessive manipulation of the skin.

5. Not using sunscreen. This one's on almost every dermatologist's mistake list. Yes, it's hard to remember to put sunscreen on your face and hands every day. Put it next to your toothbrush and you may remember. There's no immediate payoff but 20 years from now when your face is still recognizable, you'll be glad you did it.

6. Taking too-hot baths. They may feel great, but they're hard on your skin. Try to avoid piping hot baths; warm is okay.

7. Fad diets. The skin, like the rest of your organs, needs a balance of many food types, vitamins, minerals, and fluids. Eating only grapefruit or living on diet pills will show up soon enough in colorless, lifeless skin.

8. Lack of sleep. Deprive yourself—and your skin—of sleep, and you'll see the conse¬quences in the mirror. There's no ideal length of time to sleep—whatever makes you feel refreshed when you wake up is ade¬quate.

9. Sharing makeup. Sharing cosmetics means sharing the bacteria and other critters that are on others' faces. That can lead to infec¬tions, blemishes, and so on. Also, keep your

own cosmetics containers tightly sealed.

10. Using oily makeup. Cosmetics that are loaded with grease or creams can clog your pores and promote eruptions on your skin. Sometimes creams are hidden in products that look dry. Try some on your hand and see if it's greasy before purchasing it.
