INTERVIEW YOUR POTENTIAL PROVIDER, CONSIDERING PHILOSOPHY AND RESPONSIVENESS (DESCRIPTION)

Health care providers don't deserve your business: they should earn it. Dr. Susan Skochelak, associate professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin and an expert on the doctor-patient relationship, recommends an initial introductory visit with a potential caregiver during which you can screen them for the qualities that matter to you most. Some doctors will charge less for this kind of appointment; others will even provide a brief introductory session free of charge—but this is not the rule. In this meeting, be direct in questioning the clinician about his/her approach to health care (Is prevention important to them?) and take note of whether she is giving you time to talk, listening to your questions and answering them directly. Chemistry is important in the doctor-patient relationship. Is this practitioner respectful, focused, attuned to your particular needs?

YOUR BODY, INSIDE AND OUT YOUR REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY - FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD (VITAMIN D ANALOGS; PARATHYROID HORMONE; GROWTH FACTORS)

Not to be confused with the vitamin D that's found in your regular supplement tablets, vitamin D analog is a potent drug that reduced spinal fractures in studies of post-menopausal women.

Parathyroid hormone has been studied for many years and still interests many researchers as a possible treatment for bone loss. When given by injection daily along with oral vitamin D, parathyroid hormone increases bone density. The problems center around the fact that there is a very narrow safe dose range for the drug, so it must be given by injection and patients closely monitored. It's thought that too much of this drug would harm bone, not help it.

Scientists are aggressively looking at the potential role of growth factors, which are similar to growth hormones, in treating a wide variety of problems, and bone loss is high on that list. The goal is to stimulate bone production, a more aggressive approach than slowing bone loss. Results are several years down the road. According to Dr. Gregory Mundy, head of the division of endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the challenge will be to grow bone cells but not to stimulate excessive growth of other cells in the body (which could promote cancers). Dr. Mundy believes that growth factors will be at the forefront of bone preservation and fracture healing in the future.

using, you'd be better off finding a different option than taking more and more of the unhelpful drug. Also, nondrug therapies like massage, heat or icing therapy and other pain-relief regimens could make an important contribution.

What are Generics?

A generic drug is made with the same active ingredients and is available in thesame strength and dosage form as the equivalent brand-name product. Generic drugs produce the same effects in the body as the brand-name drugs, because both contain the identical active ingredients...
