YOUR BODY, INSIDE AND OUT YOUR REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY - BISPHOSPHONATES These drugs, with names like etidronate, alendronate, residronate and others, are still in experimental use for osteoporosis. This means that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires you to enroll in a formal clinical study in order to use them. The bisphosphonates have been shown to slow bone loss. Etidronate has been widely used in the treatment of other bone diseases such as Paget's disease. For this reason, many doctors prescribe it for osteoporosis without FDA approval. On the down side, because etidronate is poorly absorbed by the intestine, you must take the drug after complete fasting for several hours; experts feel that drinking even a small beverage before taking the medication can impede its absorption. Some patients experience mild stomach upset and/or nausea while taking the drug, but other side effects are rare or insignificant. We will have to wait years for the long-term safety and side effect record on these drugs. A controversy arose over etidronate when, after showing a decrease in the bone fracture rate after two years on the drug, scientists found an unexplained increase in fractures the following year. It is now believed that this latter finding was the result of statistical errors, and many leaders in the field of osteoporosis treatment feel that the "grandchildren" of etidronate—that is, the newer generations of bisphosphonates—hold strong potential for the treatment of bone loss. *126/162/1* General health |
