YOUR BODY, INSIDE AND OUT YOUR REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY - TREATMENT FOR BONE LOSS (CALCITONIN) Besides hormone replacement, calcitonin is the only other approved drug for the treatment of osteoporosis in the U.S. This drug is in fact a synthetic version of a hormone we make in our own thyroid gland. It has been approved to be given by injection only, which makes some patients leery about it—but scientists are studying a nasal spray form of the drug which is already available in Europe. In addition to reducing bone loss, calcitonin has been shown to reduce some of the pain associated with osteoporotic fractures in some patients, according to Dr. C. Conrad Johnston, Jr., former director of the division of endocrinology and metabolism at the Indiana University School of Medicine. This is an important and desirable side effect of the drug. Calcitonin is considered a good choice for women with osteoporosis who are fifteen or more years past menopause, as well as for those who have a strong family history of osteoporosis. On the down side, about one in six patients on calcitonin suffer from nausea (which sometimes disappears) and others report flushing of the skin while taking the drug. Calcitonin is costly—about two to three thousand dollars per year, which insurance won't always cover. Finally, there is some early evidence that the effectiveness of calcitonin might wear off after a few years in some patients. Dr. Johnston reports that in some cases, varying the dose of your treatment, or trying cycled therapy—that is, several months on and several months off treatment—can help offset this problem.
