When to Have Your Bones Tested
There is some disagreement over when, and how often, you should have your bones tested. The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) urges testing for all women approximately six months after menopause or after menstruation stops due to having the ovaries removed or for any other reason. These experts argue that if women were tested at this time, we would find out who has low bone density and is at risk for fractures; then early, preventive treatments could be started. This is a costly ideal, however. Each woman should consider her own risk and discuss it with her doctor.
