YOUR ROLE: WHAT YOU CAN DO TO GET MORE OUT OF YOUR CARE AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR DOCTOR (PART 5 – PREPARING AND BEING SPECIFIC) Prepare for doctor visits in the waiting room. Many of us pass the tedious minutes in a doctor's waiting room reading junk magazines or chewing our fingernails. This is a time when you could be preparing for your visit. For example, run through your most important questions and issues in your mind. Check your list of topics, or remember the three most important issues you want to cover during this visit. If you're embarrassed to raise a given issue, such as your concern that you may have been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease, plan how you might be able to do it the least painfully. Being direct is the best approach. Remember there's almost nothing your doctor hasn't heard a hundred times before. Be as specific as you can be when describing symptoms or problems. Whenever possible, make your practitioner aware of the important details of your problem. How should you define "important"? Consider the where's, when's and how's, for starters. Where are you when the symptom appears (only at work? sitting in a certain position? in bed? outdoors? indoors?); when does it most often occur (when exercising? early in the morning, or late at night? before or after meals?); how does it feel, exactly (a sharp pain? a dull pulsing pain? a sensation that moves from one part of your body to another? a shivery feeling? does it come and go, or do you feel it pretty steadily?). The more information of this kind you can give to your clinician, the better the chance your problem will be deciphered quickly—or at least the appropriate tests will be done promptly. *71/162/1* General health |
