Dr. Ian McWhinney, professor emeritus of family medicine at the University of Western Ontario, has written extensively on this subject and complains that doctors too often deal in abstractions rather than concrete human needs. For example, he says, they focus on a given disease rather than on the impact of that disease on a patient. So while the doctor's narrow view centers on how to manage multiple sclerosis, for example, the patient's real concern is what it feels like to not be able to walk without assistance, or not be able to control their urination. These are the tangible, real-life issues that concern patients, and they are the issues that should concern doctors, he asserts. The biggest problem may be that doctors are failing to adequately communicate even the information they do try to give. Cindy Pearson reports that a substantial number of women call her organization to say, "I got a diagnosis and a prescription—now can you tell me what this means?"
