CONTACT SUPPORT OR EDUCATIONAL GROUPS FOR YOUR PARTICULAR PROBLEM If you are looking for a specialist in a given health problem, start by talking to other women who live in your area and have the same problem, says Cindy Pearson, program director for the National Women's Health Network. Support or advocacy groups, educational clearinghouses and other disease-specific groups can provide you the opportunity to meet others in your situation and learn about potentially good (and bad!) practitioners in your area. These are often listed in your phone book, or under toll-free information. Throughout this book you'll find "information boxes" with the names, addresses and phone numbers of some of the major support and information groups for different health problems. The fact is, any one practitioner can get a rave review from one woman and a pan from the next. But by talking to groups of women you'll start to pick up on the more general reputations of specialists in your problem. Many groups also provide written information and other important background material on your disease, so that you can become more informed before selecting a doctor. This will not only enhance your ability to choose the right kind of practitioner, but it will improve your interaction with that person once you enter his/her office (more on this below in the discussion of the doctor-patient relationship). *42/162/1* General health |
