THE SECOND SEX - BIAS IN WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE TODAY (GETTING NEEDED INFORMATION)

Specifically, the report found no overall strategy regarding what information about women's health was needed, or how to get that information to the average woman. During the research that led to the report, callers requesting women's health-related advice from local public health service offices were turned away; instead of getting needed information, they were referred to local bookstores and hospitals for help. In one astonishing example, a public health employee asked the caller what osteoporosis was! It was this combination of inadequate information and poor communication of what we did know that left women in such a quandary.

In short order, something substantial was done to rectify the dearth of information and lack of direction in women's health. In September 1990, the Office of Research on 'Women's Health (ORWH) was created at the National Institutes of Health. The goal of the office was three-fold: to increase women's participation in health research studies, to insure that NIH-supported research pays due attention to women's health issues, and to promote the number of women in biomedical and bio-behavioral careers.
