INTRODUCTION - FOUR-MINUTE TELEVISION SEGMENT For the last eight years, I have been researching, writing and producing health news stories for CBS News. Most of that time, I worked for "CBS This Morning," a national morning news program that places great emphasis on health topics (often airing seven health segments per five-day week). Because we have a disproportionately high number of women viewers, women's health issues have always been at the top of our agenda. We've tried to cover the issues that concern women most, as well as those that should be on women's minds because of their seriousness or prevalence. Over the years, I became increasingly frustrated by the fact that there is only so much you can explain in a four-minute television segment. You can briefly explain a problem, and even more briefly talk about new solutions or approaches to care. But there's precious little time to put stories in the greater context women need to make informed decisions about their health care, and almost no time at all to individualize advice to particular women's needs. Unfortunately, it's through television sound bites that many women get the bulk of their health news—which means that millions of women are getting only half the story at best, leaving them confused or frightened. *10/162/1* General health |
