How experienced is the practitioner who is going to do the abortion? Has she/he done more than 100 of these procedures? (In most states it is not required that he/she be a board-certified OB-GYN in the U.S.—nor is there a formal cutoff number at which a practitioner should be considered "experienced." However, Dr. Richard Hausknecht of the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, insists that the doctor's experience makes all the difference in the world. He has observed that the complication rate falls considerably after a practitioner has done more than 100 to 150 procedures. Since most doctors come out of medical school without any formal training in pregnancy termination, it's easy to end up in the hands of someone who's learning on you.
