EARLY ABORTIONS: FROM CONCEPTION TO 14 WEEKS - CONCLUSION After checking the tissue visually, if everything looks normal, your practitioner will send you home, but the tissue should also be sent to a pathologist who will determine more precisely that it is complete—that is, the whole placenta was removed (this can take a day or two). Very rarely, there will be a discrepancy between what the clinician saw and what the pathologist determines; if the abortion was not complete, or not done at all, you will be called back for a repeat procedure. It is extremely important that your doctor confirm if the abortion was complete by studying the tissue collected before you leave the clinic. The reason this is so important is that (a) if the pregnancy was missed, you will need a repeat procedure, and (b) it is possible that the pregnancy is not in your uterus at all, but rather is ectopic (in your fallopian tubes or elsewhere outside your uterus). If this is the case, the normal method of abortion will not be effective and you will need immediate surgery on your tubes to protect you from a medical emergency. Ectopic pregnancy, which is more common in women with a history of pelvic infections, is not to be taken lightly and must be treated without delay. (Some abortion clinics will do a sonogram, a painless sound wave test, before performing the abortion, to be sure the pregnancy is in fact in the uterus. This is certainly preferable and helps avert some unsuccessful abortions, but not all centers have the ultrasound machine. It's a question you might want to ask beforehand. If needed, some high-tech, and potentially more expensive, offices will do a sonogram test after the abortion is complete, to be sure everything looks normal.
