PROGESTIN-ONLY PILLS - NORPLANT Often called "minipills," these progestin-only birth control pills have wide variability in their pregnancy prevention rates. The reason: when used properly and consistently—that is, taken right on time each day—they are extremely effective. When taken even slightly off schedule, however, their effectiveness drops considerably. Approved at the end of 1990, the Norplant system consists of a set of six tiny silastic rubber sticks or capsules which contain progestin; these are placed under the skin of the upper arm and provide continuous protection from pregnancy for up to five years. The progestin used with this method is called levonorgestrel. Dr. Anita Nelson of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center reports great variability in women's feelings about Norplant. While some are delighted that their periods disappear (the progestin has this effect on some women) others are bothered by this change and constantly fear they're pregnant or sick. Some women will have irregular bleeding while using the device— those who are counseled and expect it usually don't mind, but those who are surprised by it often come back to have the device removed. *477/162/1*
