Dr. Policar urges women to consider the female condom a preliminary version of a potentially useful new device which needs a lot more fine-tuning before it should be relied on independently.
Made of polyurethane, which is stronger than the latex used in male condoms (in fact, some companies are developing new male condoms out of this material for its added strength) the female condom acts as a barrier not only for the cervix but for the entire vaginal wall and the vulva as well. With a ring on each end, the device is put inside the vagina and hangs all the way out, providing a tunnel of coverage and protection throughout the vagina. Like the male condom, it's designed for onetime use; but unlike the male latex condom, it can be used with oil-based lubricants since polyurethane doesn't break down with these products. It is inserted up to eight hours before intercourse, which is a distinct advantage over male condoms.
