CERVICAL CAP AND DIAPHRAGM (HOW THE CERVICAL CAP AND THE DIAPHRAGM WORK) An advantage to the cap over the diaphragm is that it can be left in longer—up to 48 hours. The diaphragm must be removed after about 24 hours. Unlike the cap and the sponge, the diaphragm does not provide continuous protection over long periods of time. Each act of intercourse requires the addition of more spermicide with an applicator—while the device is left in place. You can have multiple acts of intercourse without adding spermicide to the cervical cap. Neither device should be left in the body-for long periods of time (over 24 hours for the diaphragm, over 48 hours for the cap) because of the risk of toxic shock syndrome. The rationale is similar to that with the contraceptive sponge or tampons: the longer you leave a device in, the greater the chance of promoting dangerous bacterial growth. The diaphragm (which has been approved longer in this country) and the cervical cap form a barrier over the cervix, keeping sperm out; they are used with spermicidal foams/ creams/jellies, which kill sperm and certain sexually transmitted organisms. *469/162/1* General health |
