CERVICAL CAP AND DIAPHRAGM – PART 2 Both the diaphragm and the cervical cap are rubber cups that are inserted into the vagina and placed over the cervix. The diaphragm is bigger and more shallow, so it doesn't hug the cervix tightly. The cap should hug the cervix when properly fitted. Spermicide is placed in the cup before insertion, so when the devices are in place, the foam or jelly is pressed against the cervix. Most practitioners advise women to put some jelly on the rim of these devices for further protection, but you don't want to make the device so slippery that it won't stay in place. Ask your health care provider to show you how much is appropriate before you leave the office. There are several different types of diaphragms; they differ primarily by the type of rim (more and less flexible). Dr. Robert Sassoon of the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center reports that the less flexible (stiffer) diaphragms are easier to remove, because it's easier to get your finger under the ring. The flexible, so-called "spring" diaphragm is easier to insert, harder to remove, and more comfortable for some women, he says.
