VAGINAL SPONGE (TODAY'S SPONGE) - INTRODUCTION About 1% of women at risk of unintended pregnancy use the sponge as their primary method of contraception. The sponge is in fact a spongy object with spermicide inside it. You wet the device before using it, then insert it deep in your vagina where it acts as both a barrier and spermicide. You can see in the table earlier in this topic that there's a big disparity between "perfect" and "typical" use success rates for the sponge; in actual use, the failure rate is quite high. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that women don't insert the sponge properly, the sponge dislodges and doesn't adequately cover the cervix, or women don't leave it in long enough (a full six hours) after sex. Dr. Policar says that women who have never had a full-term pregnancy have better success with the sponge than do women who have already borne children. This may be because once the vaginal muscles have been stretched, they don't hold the sponge snug in place quite as well. The effectiveness rate is much better (though still far from perfect) for women who have never had children. Unlike other barrier methods for women, such as the diaphragm and the cervical cap, the sponge is disposable. It provides 24 hours' protection and then you throw it away. *464/162/1* General health |
