ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES: "THE PILL"

About 28% of women at risk of unintended pregnancy use the Pill.

When we talk about the Pill, which has been around for over 30 years, we're usually referring to the combination hormone pill containing both synthetic estrogen and a synthetic form of progesterone, called a progestin. There are several different pills on the market today, with different forms and concentrations of estrogen in them—and different forms and amounts of progestins. Older pills generally have more estrogen; newer ones are called "low-dose" pills because they have less estrogen. Most experts feel that women should avoid high-dose estrogen pills, for some reasons we'll discuss shortly; and in the last several years, the vast majority of women have made the switch to low-estrogen oral contraceptives. Try to use a pill with no more than 35 micrograms of estrogen, and a low progestin level. 98% of women can and should take low-estrogen pills. Dr. Policar, formerly of

Planned Parenthood of America, notes that a very small percentage of women cannot take low-dose pills because their failure rate will be higher than usual. One example: women taking antiseizure medication, because these medications can interfere with estrogen activity.
