MAKING THE DECISION YOUR OWN Dr. Diane Meier, professor of geriatrics and medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, is disturbed by the number of patients who come into her office saying they've been told by other doctors that they must take estrogen—that they should pop it like vitamin C. Dr. Meier considers the following problems strong indications for hormone therapy: debilitating sensations of menopause, below-normal bone density even before menopause, and heart disease. But beyond these clearer-cut cases, hormone replacement is not for everyone, she says. The bottom line is you have to wake up in the morning and feel you're doing the right thing! If you can't do that, regardless of your risk factors, you shouldn't be taking estrogen, Meier says. As much as you may want some authority figure to make this tough decision for you, it's one you must make on your own if you are ever to live with it comfortably. Dr. Laura Bookman of the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston urges women who do choose to take hormones to attend lectures, group meetings and other information sessions on hormone therapy to learn as much as possible about what to expect from the treatment in both the short and long term. She observes that her patients who become highly informed are far more likely to be satisfied with hormone replacement therapy than those who don't. The fact is, no one wants surprises (especially uncomfortable ones) when it comes to their health. The more you know (and the more your fears are replaced with information), the more empowered you will be—and the greater the chance that you will own your decision about hormone therapy. *419/162/1*
