SURGICAL OR ARTIFICIAL MENOPAUSE Menopause that is brought on suddenly by the removal of the ovaries or some other damage to the hormonal system tends to cause more dramatic sensations and problems than does natural menopause. Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, bone loss, a sharp climb in the "bad" cholesterol, earlier heart disease onset and a whole host of other problems are often exaggerated and quickened when menopause occurs suddenly. One reason for this may be that instead of gradually becoming accustomed to lower estrogen levels, which is what the body normally does in the perimenopausal years, the body is jolted into an estrogen-free state, and reacts more abruptly.
