A BRIEF WORD ABOUT NUTRITION DURING AND AFTER THE MENOPAUSE
As our bodies age, we have different nutritional needs. Older women have a lesser ability to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight, and may need to get more in the form of a daily supplement. We have less stomach acid as we grow older, so our absorption of nutrients like folic acid and vitamin Bj2 drops. Our bones need more calcium—up to about 1500 milligrams a day— which can be hard to get from foods alone. Perhaps a small calcium supplement would help you meet your goal.
There are also some nutrients we need less of after menopause, such as iron. Since we're no longer losing iron in blood through menstruation, our iron needs drop.
You might consider sitting down with your doctor or a trained nutritionist to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your diet at this important life juncture.
