CHANGES IN MENTAL ACUITY - ESTROGEN'S ROLE Thus more and more pieces of the puzzle are falling into place, suggesting that estrogen's role in brain function is a vital one. Dr. Wolf Utian, chairman of reproductive biology at Case Western Reserve University and director of the North American Menopause Society, argues that mental changes among menopausal women may not be the result of indirect estrogen deprivation. Rather, he attributes the changes to various social problems, lack of sleep and irritability caused by hot flashes, and other physical discomforts associated with menopause (the so-called domino or snowball effect again). He notes that women who live in cultures where aging and menopause are valued and esteemed as signs of seniority (certain African tribes, for example) function wonderfully after the menopause, while women in youth-obsessed cultures like our own tend to have most of the so-called "mental acuity" problems we hear so much about. Dr. Arpels argues that whatever the underlying connection between impaired brain function and the menopause, women who have symptoms should be given the option of estrogen replacement because "women deserve to be hitting on all cylinders, and with estrogen deprivation, they aren't."
