THE "NEST RE-FILLING" SYNDROME AND OTHER LATER-LIFE BURDENS

Kaufert and McKinlay report that the empty nest syndrome, supposedly so common in the past, has for many women been replaced by something they call the "nest-refilling" syndrome. This occurs when adult children move back home with their parents due to economic or other social stresses, bringing with them significant problems and predisposing their menopausal mothers to depression. Whether these women would have suffered depression without the kids' return home is not clear. But it's increasingly rare to find menopausal women who are depressed just because of menopause.

For women entering menopause at a later age—and whose parents are older and becoming frail, ill or dependent—this can be an especially stressful time. We've read a lot lately about the "sandwich" generation caught between the needs and demands of young adult children and ailing older parents; if this "sandwiching" phenomenal coincides with the menopause, the emotional and physical toll can be quite difficult for some women. Again, it's not menopause itself that causes depression or emotional lability: It's the other demanding life events piled on top of this time of hormonal change that can push some women into depression. Nancy Woods, Director of the Center for Women's Health Research at the University of Washington, reports that most of the "blue mood" associated with menopause is a factor of other life problems, ranging from divorce or other relationship troubles to trying to meet the demands of too many roles ("parenting" both children and older parents, working, dealing with poverty and other stressors so common to women in this country).
