There are certain mood changes associated with menopause. Dr. Hutchinson notes. The "blues," irritability and anger are common at this time. But we mustn't call these serious psychological problems, she insists. Rather, they are normal responses to a society that doesn't appreciate older women, as well as responses to physiologic changes like lack of sleep.
There is a definite subset of women who report "not feeling as psychologically well" as they did before the menopausal years, says Dr. Laura Bookman, director of the Menopause Wellness Center at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. And while researcher Patricia Kaufert of the University of Manitoba does not find increased levels of depression associated with menopause itself, she does find that certain coincidental life events and physical sensations of menopause {see the list above) may predispose certain women to psychological distress.
