They are not regulated like drugs; therefore, when you see a name on a label, you are not guaranteed that you'll find this ingredient inside the package. If you want to try herbs, then treat them like medication and find out how much you're taking and if you're actually taking the herb you expect. It may cost you a pretty penny, but it's worth bringing an herbal preparation to the chemical laboratory of a nearby hospital to have the substance fully analyzed. I interviewed a chemist in Arizona who had found actual drugs like steroids and valium in supposedly pure herb preparations. He also discovered that some of the names and functions of the herbs, which were written in Chinese, were not listed correctly. This is not to say that certain well-controlled herbal preparations won't help relieve unpleasant menopausal sensations. But be a cautious consumer. Lonnie Barbach, author of a book on menopause called The Pause: Positive Approaches to Menopause, acknowledges that there is a dearth of scientific information about herbal remedies for menopausal sensations.
