HOT FLASHES: SENSATIONS AND SOLUTIONS - DESCRIPTION Flashes can occur several times an hour at their worst, or far less frequently. Unfortunately, they often occur at night, and can disturb sleep (which, as we'll discuss later, can set off a domino effect producing many other menopausal sensations). Fredi Kronenberg, director of the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Center of Alternative/ Complementary Medicine, reports that there is great variety in how women experience hot flashes: some sweat profusely, some hardly sweat at all; some have significantly increased heart rates, while for others the increase is minimal. McKinlay finds that hot flashes are most common in the years before menopause, peak at menopause and then rapidly taper off. She also finds that women who have more depression before menopause may be at increased risk for hot flashes around the time of menopause.
