Are you surprised by this one? Some research has suggested that certain cases of PMS are caused by an infection of some kind—perhaps a bacterial infection. When treated with antibiotics to kill the potential infection, some women get better. We need more research in this area, but there is some promise at least for a subset of women afflicted with PMS.
Antianxiety Drugs
Antianxiety drugs are sometimes given during PMS symptoms. They're mild tranquilizers, some of which have been found to help. Interestingly, one such drug, alprazolam, not only relieved some of the emotional symptoms of PMS but also the physical ones. It is important to take these drugs under careful supervision by a doctor in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms. One suggestion is to taper off the drug by the end of the menstrual cycle. Another antianxiety drug, called buspirone, caused sedation, constipation and dry mouth, but also helped relieve PMS.
