PART 2 But there are some variations—for instance, some women feel crummy when they ovulate (that's at mid-cycle), then they feel better briefly and then crummy again just before their periods begin. Other women go up and down every day in the week or two before their periods. Some feel bad for the entire two weeks before their periods begin, and then feel terrific as soon as their periods start. Far more serious, Endicott says, is PDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), a condition described in the The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-4). To be diagnosed as having PDD, you must have at least five of the following eleven symptoms. They must occur in the last week before you menstruate, and subside when your period starts. Finally, these symptoms must markedly interfere with your usual activities, both social and work-related.
