WHO'S AT RISK FOR PMS? Young women who have just started menstruating sometimes have premenstrual discomfort, and women who are heading toward menopause have their own set of changes to experience, including PMS. But the largest group of women who turn up in PMS clinics seems to be 30 to 40 year-olds, and often the mothers of two or more children. If your mother had PMS, you're more likely to have it, too. Furthermore, many women report that their premenstrual symptoms worsen with age, but as Jane Harrison-Hohner, director of the Menstrual Disorders program at the Oregon Health Science University points out, that could easily be a result of the increased pressures on many women as they grow older. Working outside the home while raising children and trying to keep a marriage healthy is highly stressful and is thought to contribute to PMS, as does any kind of outside life stress. This is not to say that emotional stress is responsible for PMS; it's just one reason why stress management is increasingly thought to be an important part of PMS treatment. Other groups of women at high risk for PMS include those with underlying mental illnesses, such as chronic depression. If you're depressed, you're more likely to have premenstrual mood problems—and on the flip side, your underlying problems will often be exacerbated premen-strually. This is called "premenstrual magnification," and it's often treatable. Premenstrual magnification can affect physical as well as psychological health problems. For instance, asthma and herpes infections are known to flare pre-menstrually for some women.
