Oral contraceptives, which override the body's normal hormone production and create an artificial, regular cycle, may be the best temporary solution for some women. Extreme emotional stress is another potential cause of missed periods. Again, remember the significant role of the brain and the chemicals it produces to bring on menstruation. A disruption in brain chemicals associated with stress, depression, extreme grief or some other powerful emotional upheaval can throw the delicate menstrual cycle off course. Time may cure the problem, but if the problems are severe and persistent, counseling or medication may be warranted. Sometimes secondary amenorrhea is brought on by a problem that's easy to identify and just as easily reversed if bothersome. For example, some (but certainly not all) women taking progestin-only contraceptives (like Depo-Provera, the minipill and Norplant) lose their periods after some time on the medication.
