No matter how old you are, if you are sexually active and have not yet reached menopause, this should be considered immediately. It is extremely important for all women to become familiar with their menstrual cycles, and to pay attention to the timing of their most recent periods, so that if pregnancy occurs, they're able to pinpoint the likely time of conception. Some practitioners tell of intelligent women who appear in their offices thinking they might be one month pregnant who are in fact closer to three months pregnant—simply because they've forgotten the dates of their last period. If you want to continue that pregnancy, you've lost important prenatal care; if you want to terminate the pregnancy, you may have brought yourself into a later and more dangerous time for pregnancy termination. Pay attention to your body! Sometimes breast-feeding can hold off periods for several months if it's done absolutely exclusively (that is, no infant formula supplementation at all). Other causes of secondary amenorrhea include highly vigorous athletic training and eating disorders (as mentioned above); minimal weight gain of a few pounds or cutting back training intensity can often bring periods back. Ovarian cysts or tumors can interrupt menstruation; their removal will often restore normal menstruation. Thyroid problems may be the culprit; proper medication can return menstrual flow.
