MENSTRUAL PAIN, WATER WEIGHT GAIN, AND OTHER PHYSICAL PROBLEMS WITH MENSTRUATION - ACETAMINOPHEN AND ASPIRIN ARE DIFFERENT STORIES Many practitioners I spoke with report that acetaminophen (Tylenol) does little or nothing for menstrual pain. But they add that since it is a pretty benign medication, if it seems to help you, there's no reason to switch to another medication for pain. On the other hand, many practitioners advise against taking aspirin for menstrual pain, since it can increase both bleeding and the production of prostaglandins. If your pain continues to be severe even while you're taking over-the-counter pain medicine, do not keep upping the dose to try to find relief. Discuss the situation with your doctor. While these drugs are nearly ubiquitous and one would like to think they're harmless, they can be dangerous in excessive amounts—causing harm to the lining of the stomach and other problems. Some NSAIDS are available in stronger doses by prescription; if your doctor prescribes them and monitors you appropriately, this is much safer than taking larger and larger doses of the over-the-counter forms on your own. For chronic discomfort, some doctors prescribe oral contraceptives—by "taking over" the menstrual cycle, these drugs sometimes break the pain cycle. *326/162/1* General health |
