MENSTRUAL PAIN, WATER WEIGHT GAIN, AND OTHER PHYSICAL PROBLEMS WITH MENSTRUATION - DISCOMFORT WITH MENSTRUATION Most women have some discomfort with menstruation. Usually it comes in the form of abdominal pain or cramping, breast tenderness and, for some women, generalized achiness. Dr. Rabin urges women to look on the bright side of this pain; we're feeling it for a good reason, she explains. Our bodies are producing chemicals called prostaglandins that help stop menstrual bleeding before it becomes excessive. This spasm of vessels causes pain. If you have mild premenstrual pain, you'll usually be helped by over-the-counter painkillers, particularly the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs mentioned earlier. Some experts report that fewer women have been complaining of menstrual pain since use of over-the-counter NSAIDS became more routine. The best approach, according to Dr. Michelle Warren, head of reproductive endocrinology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, is to take one of these medications before your pain becomes severe. A good analogy, she says, is seasickness; once you've got it, there isn't much you can do to undo it. The same goes for menstrual pain; medications can't do too much to eliminate the pain you're already feeling. But when taken shortly before pain becomes severe, at the first twinge (most women come to know their systems well enough to recognize this threshold), medication can prevent the worst cramping for many women. Some practitioners advise taking a larger dose of NSAIDS at first, and then tapering to a smaller dose as pain abates. Discuss the proper dosing with your doctor. *325/162/1* General health |
