USING TAMPONS AND PADS TO CONTAIN MENSTRUAL FLOW

There is no right choice for containing menstrual blood. The best choice is the option with which you feel most comfortable. Both tampons and pads are safe and effective, though women have their favorites and tend to swear by one or the other. Some women with heavy flow use both at once to avoid soiling clothing, but remember, if you're saturating both methods constantly throughout the day, your bleeding may be excessive.

There is no "rule," but there are guidelines for tampon use. You may have heard of a problem called toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which is caused when a certain family of bacteria that produces a toxin multiplies in the vagina and leads to a life-threatening syndrome of fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and ultimately shock. This condition, though quite rare, has been associated with leaving too-absorbent tampons (and other objects like certain barrier contraceptives) in the vagina for too long. The theory holds that the tampon absorbs and traps the bacteria, promoting its growth. How to translate "too long," however, is a bit of a problem. Most practitioners advise removing tampons after a couple of hours, even if you haven't yet saturated them. There are instructions regarding TSS inside leading tampon brand boxes. The message of caution is especially important late in your period, when you may be bleeding very little and could be tempted to leave a tampon in all day since there's little risk of staining. Don't do it. Use a smaller, thinner tampon for those light days so it will become moist enough to remove easily even if it isn't saturated with blood. With these simple precautions, tampons are extremely safe and many women find them more comfortable than sanitary pads, especially during exercise or when wearing close-fitting clothing.
