DURATION AND HEAVINESS OF FLOW - DESCRIPTION Again, while there are averages, there's no such thing as "normal" flow length or heaviness. Healthy women menstruate for as few as two days and longer than seven, Dr. Debrovner says. On average, menstruation lasts for about five days, with bleeding heavier in the first 48 hours and tapering thereafter. But there are perfectly healthy women with eight-day periods that are heavy from start to finish, as well as healthy women with very light two-day flows. When should you worry about excessive menstrual flow? According to Dr. Jay Daskal of the Illinois Masonic Medical Center, you should not have to "double up" on protection. For instance, if you need a large tampon and a sanitary pad to protect you from just two hours' flow, for example, you may be bleeding excessively heavily. It's hard to say how many tampon or pad changes is normal, since some women change eight or ten times a day when their pads aren't yet saturated. As a general guideline, though, Dr. Daskal advises that if you are soaking ten tampons or pads each day (even after the first couple of days of flow), if the blood runs down your legs or is very thick and clotted, you might want to discuss it with your health care provider. *319/162/1* General health |
