A woman's first few periods are usually not on a scheduled pattern. According to Dr. Charles Debrovner of New York's Roosevelt Hospital, the key is regularity. If a woman has a 28-day cycle for several years and then switches suddenly to a 40-day cycle, she might want to investigate. If she has had a regular 40-day cycle for many years, she's probably perfectly healthy—and can count herself among the lucky ones who get fewer periods per year. It can take a few years for your regular cycle to kick in. Adolescents who have had their periods for just a couple of months—or even a couple of years—can have quite irregular cycles (missing occasional periods, for example) without arousing much concern.
