THE REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE – PART 2 The estrogen "talks back" to the pituitary, letting it know to start producing another hormone, called LH (luteinizing hormone). With LH and estrogen at their peaks, the follicles do as they were told and release a ripe egg into the fallopian tubes, where it can be fertilized if sperm is present. The follicle, now "empty," is not done with its work. It becomes the corpus luteum, or yellow body, which makes the hormone progesterone. In turn, the progesterone helps thicken and prepare the lining of the uterus for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the progesterone level eventually drops off and the uterine lining breaks down and sheds. The result is menstruation—the start of the entire cycle once again. That "blood" you see is largely made up of uterine lining that wasn't needed to support a pregnancy. This is why menstrual blood is not liquidy like pure blood, but often slightly more clotted. Mucus also makes menstrual flow more clumpy. Cycle Length It's easy to see how any blip in the machinery— at the level of the brain, the chemical messengers or the reproductive organs—can throw a woman's cycle off track.
