What is perhaps more striking than society's obsession with the act of menstruation is the remarkable process that takes place in our bodies to create it. For those of us who menstruate regularly, and who complain half-heartedly about the nuisance of it, we tend to take for granted the dramatic act that plays out in our bodies to bring menstruation about.
On average, at about age twelve, girls will menstruate for the first time. It can be scary—if you've never seen blood on your toilet paper or underwear before, you're apt to think something terrible is occurring. Some young women fear they have a fatal disease. If you're lucky, your mother, sister, aunt or some other knowing older woman is nearby for reassurance. That's if you're willing to speak up and report what has transpired. My maternal grandmother, who happened to be visiting when my big event occurred, beamed "welcome to the club." Clearly the culture of menstruation had changed somewhat in the 30-plus years since she had subscribed to the dead plant theory.
