TYPES OF HYSTERECTOMY – PART 1

If you elect to have a hysterectomy—or if you have no choice—talk to your physician about the different types of surgery available and see if the least invasive forms are appropriate for you. About 3/4 of hysterectomies are done with an incision in the abdomen. This results in the longest hospital stay and the highest cost, but might be your only option—especially if your surgeon is planning to do other exploratory surgery in addition to the hysterectomy. One-fourth of hysterectomies are done vaginally, either with an incision in the vagina or, in the case of laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH), with a tiny incision in the abdomen—and then removal of the uterus through the vagina. These are shorter procedures with shorter hospital stays.

It's also extremely important that you talk to your doctor about how extensive your hysterectomy will be. Just as there are various degrees of surgery for breast cancer (ranging from the removal of the lump to removal of the entire breast with surrounding lymph nodes), so there are different degrees of hysterectomies. With a supracervical hysterectomy, your uterus is removed and your cervix is left in place.
