HYSTERECTOMY - APPROPRIATE REASONS Some appropriate reasons for a hysterectomy include: 1. Invasive cancer of the cervix, or cancer of the uterus. 2. Severe, debilitating endometriosis that does not respond to repeated attempts at other treatment, including both drugs and surgery. 3. Severe prolapse of the uterus that cannot be repaired surgically. 4. Uncontrollable nonmenstrual vaginal bleeding—"uncontrollable" meaning that hormone therapy, dilation and curettage (D & C), minor surgery, and other less invasive options have been unsuccessful. 5. Certain fibroid tumors, because of their size, position, painfulness, recurrence or total failure to respond to other treatment. Some inappropriate reasons for a hysterectomy are: 1. A pre-cancerous condition of the cervix, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (which can - be treated with laser, freezing or burning techniques). 2. Minor prolapse of the uterus (which can be repaired by lifting the ligaments that hold the uterus in place, or, in the short term, by putting some sort of support below the uterus). 3. Small fibroid tumors that cause no pain, bleeding or other problems—"just because they're there." 4. Moderate vaginal bleeding, before other treatment methods have been attempted (this may be one of the reasons for the most over-performed hysterectomies). 5.
