Your expectations before surgery are extremely important, because these procedures are not often cure-alls, and carry risks of their own. If you go into surgery expecting a complete cure, you may be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you expect some reasonable amount of improvement, which you may have to bolster with lifestyle changes, you're more likely to be pleased with your result. Your doctor should be able to give you a reasonable estimate of success (though certainly you could do better or worse than she estimates) based on your current condition. In addition to repairing or readjusting the damaged parts of your bladder system or pelvic musculature, some doctors recommend inserting internal support devices—such as a hammocklike structure that helps hold your pelvic organs in place.
