LUPUS (SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS) – GENERAL INFORMATION Patients can experience vastly different extremes of the problem, notes Dr. Sara Walker, chief of the rheumatology section at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. One woman might be bothered by occasional skin rashes and minor joint pain, while another has severe or even life-threatening kidney failure. Others will have occasional "flares" of bothersome symptoms, feeling fine most of the time (remissions that can last for years) but occasionally suffering more difficult bouts with the disease. Dr. Walker says that about two-thirds of patients have the milder form of lupus, while the other third suffers from more serious disease. Most women experience some degree of ups and downs with this disease—and while it cannot be cured, symptoms can often be at least relieved when they're at their worst. Some find that symptoms abate after menopause, which fits with a recent theory that sex hormones, like estrogen, may play a role in exacerbating the disorder. *277/162/1* General health |
