OTHER UNEXPLAINED PELVIC PAIN – PART 2 Sometimes a cause will never be found, which is terribly frustrating for doctors and patients alike. In certain unsolved cases, Dr. Punch notes, antidepressant medication can be used to relieve pelvic pain of unknown cause. The idea is not that depression caused the pain. Rather, the same system of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) that affect mood also affect the pain system. Sometimes, old-line antidepressant drugs called tricyclic antidepressants have helped patients who have tried just about everything else for pelvic pain. These drugs do have side effects, but they may be worth the price if there is less pain. Dr. Punch expects more study to be done on newer antidepressant drugs with lower side effect profiles, to see if they work against pain as well. Other more sophisticated methods of pain management are also being used at pain centers—such as nerve blocks and other techniques that can reduce pain in specific areas of the body.
