Don't do it. Unless specifically advised by your doctor, douches are not the best solution for vaginal irritations. The reason: while rinsing away abnormal bacteria or other organisms, they also rinse away needed vaginal flora—that is, the organisms that normally live in your vagina and keep it healthy and balanced. Furthermore, some products contain deodorants or other chemicals that can irritate the vulva themselves! Find out what's causing your irritation and treat the problem properly, whether with yeast medication, antibiotics or whatever your doctor determines is appropriate. After that, regular cleaning in the bath or shower is sufficient. Many of the same precautions that deter yeast will also deter this organism for how to keep the vagina dry and clean. But once you have an infection, treatment is quite different. The quickest and best medication is metronidazole, which can be placed into the vagina as a cream, with an applicator. Generally, it's not necessary to treat male partners, because the penis isn't nearly as pleasant a breeding ground for these bugs as the vagina is.
